Running Coach or Training Plan: Which Do You Actually Need?

Coaching isn't simply "better" — here's how to work out which level of support actually fits where you are.

Townshend Performance · 16 September 2026 · 7 min read

You've entered the race. You know you need to train. The real question is whether you need a coach, or whether a well-built training plan will do the job.

Coaching isn't simply "better." At Townshend Performance we offer both, because runners need different levels of support at different stages — and we'd rather you pay for the support you actually need.

What's the Difference?

A personalised training plan gives you the structure: a clear progression toward your goal, built around your background, current fitness, target race, terrain and available time — running sessions, strength and conditioning, recovery, fuelling and race-day strategy. Once it's delivered, you manage it. Our own plans don't include ongoing coaching, session feedback or analysis — that's the trade-off for the lower cost.

Coaching gives you that structure plus an ongoing relationship. Your coach sees how you're responding, reviews your sessions, and adjusts what comes next — because you're progressing faster than expected, dealing with fatigue, travelling for work, racing unexpectedly, carrying a niggle, or just having a bad week. That responsiveness is the core difference between having a plan and having a coach.

When a Training Plan Works Really Well

Not every serious runner needs a coach. Plenty can train independently — what they're missing isn't motivation, it's structure. You might already know the difference between normal fatigue and a warning sign, and be comfortable adjusting a session when you need to. What you may not know is how to structure 12, 16 or 24 weeks toward a specific race: how much climbing, how long the long run should be, where strength training fits, when to start race-specific work, how much to taper.

The upside? A good plan removes that guesswork without the ongoing cost of coaching — and unlike a generic downloadable programme, it's still built around you. We build the plan around the runner, not the other way round.

Two runners entering the same mountain race can need completely different preparation depending on their terrain, experience and strengths — one might be aerobically strong but new to technical ground, another might have years of fell experience but lack sustained endurance. A generic template can't tell the difference. A properly built plan does.

Why You Might Need a Coach Instead

Because knowing what you intended to do and knowing what you should do today aren't the same thing — and a static plan can't see the difference. A coach can.

Development Beyond One Race

We're not just trying to get you through your next event — we're trying to build a better athlete over six months, twelve months, years: stronger aerobic capacity, better climbing and descending, more efficient on technical terrain, more consistent training.

An Outside Perspective

Runners aren't always good at coaching themselves. It's tempting to add more when things are going well, and to panic and change everything when they're not. Sometimes the right call is simply: you're doing fine, don't change anything. Knowing when not to change the programme is just as important as knowing when to change it.

Real Accountability

Not "did you complete every session," but an honest read on how you're recovering, whether you're being honest about fatigue, and whether the training is actually moving you toward your goal. The conversation matters as much as the programme.

Flexibility Built Around Your Life

Training should fit around your job, family and everything else — not the other way round. When life changes, coaching lets the training change with it: moving sessions, cutting volume, swapping a workout, or deciding the best session today is no session at all.

Coaching tends to make more sense if you're after longer-term development rather than one event, your goals are ambitious, your schedule is unpredictable, you're stepping into unfamiliar terrain or distance, or you struggle to judge your own training objectively. For mountain, fell, trail and sky runners specifically, elevation, technical ability, descending tolerance, fuelling and pacing all add layers that matter more as races get longer and steeper.

When a Plan Is Probably Enough

If you train well independently, understand your body, have a predictable routine, and mainly want an experienced coach to work backwards from a specific race — a plan gives you exactly that, without paying for support you don't need.

Either way, no programme should be followed blindly. A plan is a framework, not a contract — you'll have good weeks and bad ones, and the skill is in responding well. A good plan gives you that framework. Good coaching goes further by helping you interpret what's happening and make the calls together.

The Short Version

  • "Tell me how to train properly for this race" → a personalised training plan.
  • "Help me become a better runner and keep developing over time" → coaching.

Neither says anything about how serious a runner you are. Some very experienced athletes manage their own training brilliantly and just want a structured plan for one goal; others get far more from an ongoing coaching relationship. The right choice is whichever one actually gives you the support you need.

What We Offer at Townshend Performance

Our personalised training plans are built from scratch around your running history, goals, terrain, target race and weekly schedule — structured running, strength and conditioning, fuelling advice and race-day strategy included.

Our one-to-one coaching takes that further: your training is planned progressively, sessions get reviewed, and the programme evolves with your response, your circumstances and your longer-term development.

Both are built on the same principle — the training fits the athlete, not the other way round.

Not Sure Which You Need?

Tell us about your running, your goals and the races you're considering, and we'll point you towards the level of support that makes the most sense for you.
